Ultimate Brown Bears, Katmai, AK - we know bears! And, this will be our 6th year at the lodge.
August 16-23, 2009

August 23-30, 2009

Join Award winning Master photographer Charles Glatzer, for an unparalleled photographic encounter with Alaska's brown bears.

This STL workshop is for advanced photographers who want to photograph coastal brown bears, and other wildlife in a remote wilderness area away from crowds. Our primary goal is to photograph brown bears feeding on salmon within a variety of backgrounds. Natural behavior can frequently be photographed at close range. Our small group and private access allows us to make the most of each wildlife encounter. Unlike other facilities and camps, we have the luxury of staying on location for extended periods without the pressure of crowds, away from any man made structures. Daily review of images via a laptop computer, and photo instruction along with post-production and PhotoShop techniques will be discussed at length.

"Shoot the Light" Photographic Instructional Workshops are designed to enhance your visionary skills, as well as your technical execution. Special emphasis is placed on creating images with Visual Impact. Increase your proficiency while using compositional elements and light to design in-camera images that are a cut above. Every Instructional Photographic Workshop has but one goal offering the participant the most education for the dollar. Planned by a photographer for photographers, each is unique, dedicated to bringing you only the finest in photographic instruction. All photography workshops now employ state of the art digital photography technology, allowing real time, in-field assessment of metering theory and compensation, composition, fill flash, DOF, etc.

To ensure the best instruction and bear interaction possible this workshop will be limited to a maximum of six participants

Where is the lodge?
On the coast of Katmai National Park and Preserve about 200 miles southwest of Anchorage.

How do I get there?
Take Alaska Airlines or Era Aviation from Anchorage to Kodiak. At the Kodiak airport, guests are met by lodge staff and taken to float plane charter companies for transport to the lodge.

What time should I arrive at/depart from Kodiak?
Guests should ideally take a flight from Anchorage to Kodiak (there are currently three flights before noon) arriving in Kodiak on the16th. Guests depart Kodiak for the Katmai lodge at midday on the 17th. The same plane brings guests back from the lodge, arriving in Kodiak between 2:00 to 3:00 PM on the 24th.. There are currently three departures from Kodiak to Anchorage with the first departing Kodiak at about 4:45 PM.

How much time will I get to spend away from the lodge photographing bear?
You will arrive at the lodge around mid-day. Stow your gear and get going right away your first afternoon. Leave the lodge early, stay out late everyday, eating a sack lunch on the boat.
The day you leave we take you out a final time before the plane arrives to take you home

Our itinerary is flexible, and so we will discuss the options each evening before heading out the next morning. The days are long and photo opportunities are abundant. We will make every effort to put you in the right place at the right time. This is your workshop, and we aim to please. We have timed this workshop with the salmon run, and we look forward to capturing many wonderful images of brown bears chasing and feeding on fish. Additionallyy, this is the best time to sight and photograph wolves as they feed on the remains of salmon.
