Minnesota – Black Bears

May, 15-18th, 2009- hosted by BBC award wining photog Cheryl Ertelt. Cheryl has been with STL since its inception, and has been instrumental in the participation education process.

May, 19-22nd, 2009

The sanctuary is closed to the public at this time, and we have it entirely to ourselves.

Bears and lots of them, plenty of interaction along, with spring cubs and yearlings of all sizes
. This will be my seventh year and 15th visit with the black bears..knowing there behavior translates into better imagery.

Come join us in Orr, Minnesota - "The best place in North America to view and photograph black bears and cubs in their natural habitat." Nestled in the North Woods of Minnesota, the Sanctuary is located approximately two hours northwest of Duluth. The nearest town is Orr, which is about thirty minutes away. While black bears are the primary focus, the various habitats of the Sanctuary are home to a variety of fauna and flora, including - pine martin, woodchuck, chipmunk, and red squirrels.Songbirds are particularly abundant in May, with hummingbirds in August.

Through an exclusive arrangement, experience and photograph the behavior and secretive life of the normally reclusive black bear. Gain first hand valuable insight about bear biology, ecology, and habitat. We are proud to offer this Photographic Workshop at this unique Sanctuary. This is one you will not want to miss. This workshop provides you with an amazing in-field photographic experience.

Our primary focus in May will be cubs born in January or February; fur-balls of energy, inquisitive and playful they are sure to delight even the most accomplished wildlife photographer. With many bears present this is a great time to capture behaviorial interaction, and portraits, along with cubs of all sizes.

Comments- "Just got back today. Hands down the best tour I ever went on...Charles is a great guy and will stop shooting to answer any question. I saw him help another person in the group with their equipment, even carrying it himself several times. He knows his stuff cold and went at it from dawn to dusk every day. Several times we were all laughing about almost nothing to the point of tears....a really great trip. Sign up man, you will get a lot out of it...at night and during times when bears were quiet we looked at images and Photoshop on his lap top.. Outstanding.in every way. I cant wait for my 80 rolls to get back.."
DO -

I had the distinct pleasure and privilege to participate in the Black Bear Workshop in Orr, Minnesota skillfully arranged and managed by Charles Glatzer. Although I had heard in advance of his uncommon abilities as an instructor, the experience exceeded by far my expectations. Charles is tireless as well as knowledgeable and has a unique ability to convey information to photographers of all levels of expertise. He not only makes himself available to address any and all questions but also has an uncanny knack of sensing when you might be considering a question. He will quietly point out problems with a particular shot that you never realized existed. Finally, Charles will go out of his way to help each individual with his or her specific difficulties, spending several hours with me during noontime lulls to work on my weaknesses in the digital darkroom. He is personable, most approachable, always available, and lacks the inflated ego sometimes seen in individuals at the top of their field. All of this combined with the superb natural setting and availability of black bears to photograph makes this workshop a most memorable and valuable experience.
